A Practical Guide to Styling Open Shelves

Open shelves are both furniture and composition. Start by placing the largest items first, then layer smaller pieces around them. Books, baskets, and boxes give the shelf purpose, while plants and art soften the structure.

The easiest rule is to vary height and texture. Put a tall vase near stacked books, a woven basket beside a clean storage box, and leave at least one area open.

Edit Before You Add

A shelf should not hold everything. It should hold the things that make the room feel considered. Store the rest in drawers, cabinets, or bins.
